Note: The Inverness Emigrant Index shows that he gave his age as 23 when he sailed to Australia. This makes his birth year 1816. His age at death was given in the press (see death source below) as 83, giving him a birth year of 1814. His death certificate (1264/1897) says that he was 80 years old, giving him a birth year of 1817.

Ross, J.P., of this town, held a magisterial inquiry at "Ivy Lodge," Mrs. McInnes', on Monday, 1st inst., touching the death of an old man named John McInnes, who was found dead in a water-hole near "Ivy Lodge" the previous day. ... the old gentleman, who was 83 years of age, was in the habit of staying at friends' places for weeks at a time, and on Saturday, the 20th February, he left "Ivy Lodge"...."
Note: 1st inst. = 1st day of this month = Monday , 1st March, 1897. Death therefore occurred sometime between last sighting - Saturday 20th and discovery of the body - Sunday 28th February, probably, given the nature of the injuries (broken nose, ie. head injury), on 20th.
