Funery is a location on the mainland of Scotland opposite Mull, immortalised in a famous Gaelic song http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/item/item_audio.jsp?item_id=72713. Not sure of any connection of their property name to the family, but a couple of coincidences.... The song is in the book, "The Gesto Collection" http://www.mally.com/details.asp?id=545 collected by Donald's first cousin once removed, Keith Norman MacDonald http://www.macleodgenealogy.org/ACMS/D0015/I5385.html, but listed as "Farewell to Finarry!". The Gaelic version of this name and their previous property Glenara (Gleann àiridh) both contain the word for sheiling. Glenara is the title of a popular 19th century poem by Thomas Campbell http://www.archive.org/stream/selectenglishpoe01sinc/selectenglishpoe01sinc_djvu.txt . |
